Standard Practice for Commonly Referenced Acoustical Calculation Procedures

Importancia y uso:

5.1 The general approach to adjusting measurements for the presence of background noise is to subtract the background noise from the average level measurement, leaving only the adjusted average level. The procedure is to make two otherwise identical measurements in any order, and then calculate the adjusted average level from the two measurements. One of the measurement conditions is with the acoustic signal of interest present, in combination with the background noise. The other measurement condition is without the acoustic signal of interest, so it is only a measurement of the background noise.

5.2 The intent is to characterize identical conditions in both measurements with respect to the background noise, the only difference being the presence or absence of the acoustic signal of interest. To the extent possible all conditions should match between the two measurements, including the presence of all sources which contribute to the background noise, as well as matching the microphone positions or traverse paths and matching the instrument settings.
