Standard Practice for Soil Exploration and Sampling by Auger Borings

Importancia y uso:

4.1 Auger borings often provide the simplest method of soil exploration and sampling. They may be used for collecting disturbed soil samples and are a valuable method for determining groundwater levels and for indicating changes in strata. Auger borings may also be used to advance the hole for split-barrel penetration tests and sampling (Test Method D1586/D1586M), and for thin-walled tube sampling (Practice D1587/D1587M). Equipment required is simple and readily available. Depths of auger explorations are, however, limited by groundwater conditions, soil characteristics, and the equipment used.

4.2 This practice describes procedures associated with geotechnical applications and does not include environmental considerations like those associated with the collection of surface and subsurface soils and contaminated media samples for chemical analysis using hand-operated bucket augers (referred to as barrel augers in 5.1.4 of this practice) as described in Practice D6907. Further, Practice D6907 does not cover the use of large 12 in. (300 mm) or greater diameter bucket augers, such as those in 5.3.4 of this practice.
