2.2.1 While the benefits for DEI work are clear, well-researched and proven, because the core terms are often misunderstood, the work can face a varied amount of organizational resistance.
2.2.2 Without a standardized vocabulary, conversations can lead to confusion or miscommunication. For example, “diversity” might be narrowly understood as representation of different racial or ethnic groups, whereas others might include broader categories like gender identity, age, or socioeconomic status.
2.2.3 Additionally, many terms have become polarized, leading to understandings rooted in various political and social ideologies as opposed to definitions of the words themselves.
2.3 Clear and comprehensive definitions of relevant terminology also allows organizations to focus on the terminology that is specific to their industry, defined within the context of that industry.
